Insanity

***Travis just informed me that the lawsuit is that a group of students are suing for the right to carry guns to school. How freaking NUTS is that????? Students with guns = INSANE!***
Do you want to know what the definition of INSANE is? Allowing guns on school campus. I am not too sure of the details here, but I know there is talk of allowing guns at school for safety. First of all, guns do not equal safety. You think the guy that invented them did so for that reason? I guess he thought he did, but No, it's only purpose is to injure and most likely kill. THAT IS ITS ONLY PURPOSE PEOPLE! It has ONE purpose, and that is it. Why in the world would the government allow something like a gun to be brought onto the campus? It will only put students at risk everytime they step onto the school grounds. School is SUPPOSED to be one place where people can feel some sense of security and structure. Add guns to the picture, and you never know when that will go away. I am sure their thinking is that if someone on the campus had a gun, then the Columbine killers, or the Virginia Tech killer could have been shot before he killed all those people. Ok, so a mass murderer brings a gun to school to kill, and you whip one out yourself to kill him, how are you any different? And how does making guns ok on school campuses prevent those crazy kids that are already planning a school killing spree, from doing it so easily? You are basically inviting them- "Go ahead, bring your gun and try to shoot us all. Its ok, because I have a gun too. I don't know how to use it, but I have one." Even if they are only allowing the security gaurds to carry them, chances are they know little to nothing about how to use a gun. Listen to this, "Nearly 8% of adolescents in urban junior and senior high schools miss at least one day of school each month because they are afraid to attend. "(National Mental Health & Education Center for Children & Families, National Association of School Psychologists 1998) Can you imagine how much more afraid they would be if guns were invited onto school property? And if this issue only applies to Colleges, then how is that going to affect students who want to go to college, but are too afraid now?
Read these statistics on gun deaths.

1. America is losing too many children to gun violence. Between 1979 and 2001, gunfire killed 90,000 children and teens in America. (Children's Defense Fund and National Center for Health Statistics)

2. In one year, more children and teens died from gunfire than from cancer, pneumonia, influenza, asthma, and HIV/AIDS combined. (Children's Defense Fund)

3. The rate of firearm deaths among kids under age 15 is almost 12 times higher in the United States than in 25 other industrialized countries combined. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

4. Every day, more than 80 Americans die from gun violence. (Coalition to Stop Gun Violence)
The rate of firearm deaths among kids under age 15 is almost 12 times higher in the United States than in 25 other industrialized countries combined. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

5. American kids are 16 times more likely to be murdered with a gun, 11 times more likely to commit suicide with a gun, and nine times more likely to die from a firearm accident than children in 25 other industrialized countries combined. (Centers for Disease Control)

Sorry, this was a long post, and it was depressing. But this is in talks right now. I keep hearing it on the news and I am just really bewildered. I can't believe it is even an option. Guns are a huge problem. "Wait I have an idea, to get rid of our problem lets use guns around kids!" Does that sounds like a solution to you?

Well, I'm sure if a security was issued a gun, he'd be trained how to use it. And shooting someone who is shooting up the school is fine by me. I think I'd feel safer on a campus if there was armed protection. It's not like the security guard is going to start a killing spree. Guns can be safe if in the right hands. I'm not anti-guns.

How do you know the security guard isn't a pshyco on the verge of killing?

Because I'm not paranoid. I'd say chances are, he isn't.

I'm more with Amy on this. There are no statistics out there that say you or anyone else is safer when more guns are involved. At least not that I've seen.

Let's face it, security guards are about in the same league as postal workers.
I would be okay with armed police officers around.

yah. Armed officers, whatever. And the solution isn't 'Let's use guns around kids!, like they're shooting them at recess for fun. It's, Just in case there's some lunatic who brings a gun to school, at least we'll have a fighting chance too. That's how I see it.

POlice officers, better then nothing i guess. But they would never start assigning police officers to all the schools in america, no, first they would just allow guns to random nobodies. Doesnt make sense.

Jana, are you offended by my opinion? I dont want to offend anyone, I was just venting about this subject because I HATE GUNS!!

I hate you so much now Amy! (Where's my gun?)

no, of course I'm not offended. Every one can have an opinion, and it doesn't have to be the same.

I totally agree with you Amy.
And I am glad you asked if she was offened cause you never know. I just had to laugh at that.

Jana, you are the only person that can make me laugh out loud.

My thoughts are this - if kids were allowed to bring guns to school, my kids would be homeschooled the next day. That has to be the worst idea ever. I am OK with security guards being armed as long as they are certified and am not as anti-gun as my beautiful wife. I am all for background checks prior to purchasing guns and believe they have a good purpose.

A- You're dumb.

B- So killing and injuring is a good purpose?

C- Thanks for commenting.

Amy- I hate guns too... but after reading your post I remembered my husband telling me that when he went to school in So. Florida there were metal detectors and armed guards at the entrances because the violence among students was so bad- and that was 10+ years ago. When I think about how much worse the world is now, I am all for having the same thing here!
